This thesis investigates the complex process of racism and the two layers of racialization, the visible and invisible, used against African Americans and Palestinians in two Jewish-American novels published after the Six-Day War (Al-Naksa): Mr. Sammler’s Planet (1970) by Saul Bellow and The Tenants (1971) by Bernard Malamud. It develops the concept of “invisible racialization” to shed light on the layer of racism that is concealed behind the visible one apparent to readers. In combining the two layers together, they become the embodiment of the concept of a palimpsest. Also, the thesis aims to scrutinize the racist framework implemented in the two novels and its role in dehumanizing African Americans and annihilating the existence of Palestinians. As such, the discussion in this thesis demonstrates how both novels racialize African American characters by focusing on the myths of “primitiveness,” “criminality,” and intellectual “backwardness.” It also clarifies the ways the two novels conceal the existence of Palestinians by either racializing them as Arabs or exploiting the use of African Americans as instruments to represent Palestinians. Accordingly, this thesis highlights the exclusion, racialization, and dynamics of racism that are embedded and concealed within Jewish-American literature. It further suggests reading these two novels as Zionist narratives to argue that the exclusion and relegation of African Americans in both novels represent a visible racialization that envelopes another almost fully invisible racialization aimed to negate the Palestinian existence.
تتمحور هذه الرسالة حول الدراسة المنهجية للعنصرية بمفهومها المعقد والشائك؛ إذ تسلط الضوء على طبقتي العنصرية المستخدمتين كسلاح موجه ضد فئتين مضطهدتين هما الأفروأمريكيين والفلسطينيين، وتبين تجليات الطبقتين من خلال معاينة روايتين تندرجان تحت فئة الأدب اليهودي الأمريكي نُشرتا بعد حرب الأيام الستة (النكسة) وهما: كوكب السيد ساملر لسول بيلو والمستأجرين لبرنارد مالامود. كما تهدف هذه الرسالة إلى توظيف مفهوم "العنصرية المستترة" من خلال التركيز على الطبقة المخفية من العنصرية التي تختبئ بين سطور النص الأدبي بينما تتجلى الطبقة السطحية من العنصرية للعيان، وتركز على الإطار النقدي العام للعنصرية الموضح في كل من الروايتين ودوره في تجريد الأفروأمريكيين من إنسانيتهم، وحرمان الفلسطينيين من حقهم في الوجود. تبعًا لذلك، توضح الرسالة كيف تقوم الروايتين بإضفاء الطابع العنصري على الشخصية الأفروأمريكية من خلال التركيز على الأقاويل الباطلة المتعلقة بالـ "البدائية" و"الإجرام" و"التخلف" الفكري الموجود في هذه الفئة. كما تفصح عن النوع المستتر من الثقافة العنصرية الموجه ضد الفلسطينيين إما من خلال تعميم وصفهم كعرب وإخفاء هويتهم وطابعهم الشخصي، أو من خلال استغلال الشخصية الأفروأمريكية كأداة لمحاكاة الشخصية الفلسطينية. بالتالي، تركز الرسالة على الاستبعاد وديناميات العنصرية الكامنة في الأدب اليهودي الأمريكي، كما تقترح دراسة الروايتين على أنهما تروجان للفكر الصهيوني.
