Web 2.0 has become the buzz word for describing social media available on the Internet, such as blogs, photo and file sharing systems and social networking sites. These Web 2.0 applications are rapidly transforming citizen-citizen and citizen-government interactions in a manner not seen before. In recognition of these trends, governments are already taking a very close look at Web 2.0 and online communities in order to leverage them for designing products and services and for providing citizen services. This book brings together international scholars to provide the theoretical and practical contexts for understanding the nature of Web 2.0 technologies and their impact on political, public policy and management processes, and to explore how best Web 2.0 applications can be leveraged and aligned with the strategic goals of government organizations to add value and ensure effective governance. Drawing from experiences from countries around the globe, the book provides the theoretical context of the potential for Web 2.0 applications to transform government services, as well as practical examples of leading public sector institutions that have attempted to use Web 2.0 applications to enhance government operations, policy making and administration. There are three parts to the book, namely 1) Perspectives on Web 2.0 and Democratic Governance, 2) The Political, Policy and Management Impacts of Web 2.0 in Government, and 3) Leveraging Web 2.0 Applications for Effective Governance. This book differs from existing edited books on Web 2.0 technologies that focus primarily on politics and e-democracy because it examines the impact of the applications on politics, policy and public management. The book contributes toward the literature by filling the existing void and expanding knowledge in the field of public administration and policy, making it of interest to both academics and policy-makers.

Author: Kraiczy, Nils. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Family firms -- Innovation -- Top Management Teams -- Upper Echelon Theory -- Innovativeness.
Small and medium-sized firms are a prevalent organizational form in Germany. Their importance for the German economy is indisputable. Most of them are global market leaders in their niches and are considered to be a force for innovation in the German economy. The ability to be innovative in niche markets has been identified as the antecedent of their strong, or even dominant, competitive positions in their industries. The driver of this innovation success may well be the family, which distinguishes family firms from non-family firms. Nils Kraiczy analyzes if a family influences innovation in a family firm and if this influence has only positive effects. The dissertation focuses on the impact of top management teams on innovations interacting with family firm-specific characteristics. The author shows the complexity of family influence by presenting different effects of each investigated family firm-specific characteristic on the relationship between top management team behavior and innovation.           Contents n  Research on Family Firms n  Innovation and Firm Performance n  Top Management Teams (TMTs) in Family Firms n  TMT Risk-Taking Propensity and New Product Portfolio Innovativeness       Target Groups ·         Researchers and students in the fields of management and innovation ·         Executives in family firms       About the Author Dr. Nils Kraiczy wrote his dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Hack at the INTES Institute for Family Businesses at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, Vallendar.     Abou the Editors The series Familienunternehmen und KMU is edited by Prof. Dr. Andreas Hack, Prof. Dr. Andrea Calabrò, Prof. Dr. Hermann Frank, Prof. Dr. Franz W. Title: Fixing Higher Education A Business Manager’s Take on How to Boost Productivity in Higher Education / by Christian Schierenbeck.
Author: Schierenbeck, Christian. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Higher Education -- Productivity Gap -- Management Practices -- Policy Framework -- Educational Impact -- Educational Costs.
Christian Schierenbeck makes a provocative case that higher education across the globe suffers from a profound productivity crisis which prevents broad access to affordable and high-quality educational services. He shows how the vast productivity gap in higher education could be closed if academic managers borrowed some of the managerial practices applied by the world’s leading business enterprises. In order for this to happen in practice, the author argues for radical changes in the policy framework for higher education. Contents: Higher Education.- Productivity Gap.- Management Practices.- Policy Framework.- Educational Impact.- Educational Costs.   Target Groups: Researchers and students in the fields of management, economics, and higher education; academic managers and policymakers in higher education.   About the Author: Dr. Christian Schierenbeck completed his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Dr. Bernd Rolfes at the Chair of Banking and Finance at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Prior to enrolling as a Ph.D. student, he had served as an associate and project manager in the New York, Cologne, and Rio de Janeiro offices of an international management consultancy. SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Introduction -- A Research Framework of VLE Design Characteristics -- Theoretical Background and Outline of the Integrated Research Models -- Elicitation of VLE Design Characteristics -- Evaluation of VLE Design Characteristics.-  Conclusions.
Daniel Müller derives a multidimensional research framework simultaneously outlining and concretising particular aspects being relevant to and surrounding the elicitation and evaluation of VLE design characteristics. Based on this, the author elicits for the first time a holistic set of well-defined, simultaneously detailed and operative VLE design characteristics systematically. He evaluates the impact of the desired set of VLE design characteristics on crucial behavioural determinants of users’ behavioural intention to use and actual use of a VLE in terms of the VLE success measures of this study.

Title: Innovation without R&D Heterogeneous Innovation Patterns of Non-R&D-Performing Firms in the German Manufacturing Industry / by Oliver Som.
Author: Som, Oliver. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Firms without research and development (R&D) have frequently been neglected by mainstream innovation research. The small number of existing studies provides only fragmented and sometimes even contradictory findings, because they assume that non-R&D-performing firms show a  “typical”, homogeneous innovation pattern. Oliver Som challenges this assumption. Based on current firm-level data of the German  industry, he provides pioneer quantitative evidence of five heterogeneous innovation patterns of non-R&D-performers. The findings impressively underline the need for future innovation research, -management and -policy to extend their view on innovation beyond the scope of R&D.

Title: The Relationship between Organizational Structure and Organizational Ambidexterity A Comparison between Manufacturing and Service Firms / by Sebastian Kortmann.

Betriebswirtschaftliche Studien in forschungsintensiven Industrien

Author: Kortmann, Sebastian. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Organizational Structure -- Organizational Ambidexterity -- Dynamic Capabilities -- Contingency Theory -- Manufacturing vs. Service Firms.
Sustainable competitive advantage is dependent on a firm’s ability to simultaneously balance different activities in a trade-off situation. This capability is referred to as organizational ambidexterity and may comprise various paradoxical activities, such as exploration and exploitation. To enhance the current understanding of organizational ambidexterity and how it can be realized, Sebastian Kortmann provides at least three important contributions. Apart from the development of a theoretical framework for ambidexterity, the study uncovers which structural mechanisms support ambidextrous behavior and the extent to which these relationships are dependent on firm type.

Title: Opening the Black Box The Role of Personality and Anger in Executives’ Decision Making and Leadership / by Rebekka Sputtek.
Author: Sputtek, Rebekka. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Rebekka Sputtek sheds light upon the question of how the personality and emotional traits of executives influence their decision making and leadership behavior. While recent strategic management research has started to recognize the relevance of an executive's personality traits as antecedents of organizational outcomes, this stream has called for a more fine-grained clarification of the psychological processes underlying executive decision making. In order to contribute to the understanding of these processes, a holistic model integrating the role of an expedient set of personality variables and anger in executive’s decision making comprehensiveness as well as authenticity of transformational leadership is developed.

SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Typology of family offices -- Financial and non-financials goals of families -- Formal and informal control mechanisms -- Interdependencies between family business and family office -- Antecedents of conflict in family offices -- Consequences of conflict in family offices.
Family offices manage and coordinate a family’s combined wealth whilst preserving the family legacy and protecting family interests. The families behind these family offices control a significant percentage of the GDP of developed economies, with consequences for financial markets. Despite its practical and academic relevance, the literature has hardly explored the concept of family offices. This book is a first step to introduce the domain of family offices. To this end, the author conducted case studies with managers and family members of 21 single and multi-family offices. By exploring goals, control and conflicts of these family office structures, Stephan Wessel contributes to consider this family-influenced organization an essential constituent of management research and an ever more prominent actor in today’s global financial markets.     Contents ·         Typology of Family Offices ·         Financial and Non-Financial Goals of Families ·         Formal and Informal Control Mechanisms ·         Interdependencies between Family Business and Family Office ·         Antecedents and Consequences of Conflict in Family Offices       Target Groups ·        Researchers and students in the field of business management with a focus on strategic management, business governance and family business research ·         Families, managers and consultants in the market for family office services     The Author Dr. Stephan Wessel wrote his dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andreas Hack and Jun.-Prof. Dr. Carolin Decker at the Institute for Family Businesses at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management, Vallendar.     The Editors The series Familienunternehmen und KMU is edited by Prof. Dr. Andreas Hack, Prof. Dr. Andrea Calabrò, Prof. Dr. Hermann Frank, Prof. Franz W. Author: Rüther, Frauke. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Patent Aggregating Companies -- Management Framework -- Market for Technologies and Patents -- Archetypes -- Leveraging Patent Portfolios -- Potentials.
Entering the post-industrial age, knowledge has become an important asset for sustained competitive advantage. In recent years, a new type of patent acquirers has emerged. These companies do not produce goods and therefore, do not need patents in their historical meaning. However, they acquire patents and aggregate patent portfolios and little is known about them. Frauke Rüther defines patent aggregating companies and explores their strategies, activities, and their evolution over time, as well as how producing companies can utilize them to leverage their patent portfolios.

Title: Integration of Preference Analysis Methods into Quality Function Deployment A Focus on Elderly People / by Samah Abu-Assab.
Author: Abu-Assab, Samah. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Especially in industrial countries the portion of elderly people is growing in many societies. Their needs are more intensified than the demands of younger people in many aspects. Companies need the right tools (e.g. market research methods for elderly people) to detect these needs, preferences, and demands of elderly people. Samah Abu-Assab verifies two existing research methods and suggests a new one for determining the preferences of elderly people. The new method seems to be promising and adequate for the elderly target group.

General Notes: Managers in international joint ventures work with resources contributed by investors from multiple nationalities. Fan Wu shows through a series of experimental studies among students and managers from China, South Korea, Germany, and the USA that cultural affinity between the manager and one of the investors and career perspectives with one of the investors are strongly motivating managers to make biased decisions. The two mechanisms can be used to balance each other out in staffing key positions in international joint ventures for optimal control over managerial decisions.

In particular, she aims at investigating whether strategic fit determines family firm performance and what role family influence plays. Based on a sample of German family firms, the author indicates that, against expectations, family firms’ performance is not driven by strategic fit but through the effective use of family-specific factors such as family business governance and family culture. Further, the results suggest that family influence has important implications for strategy, organizational structure, and the achievement of strategic fit.

Title: Formal and Informal Strategic Planning The Interdependency between Organization, Performance and Strategic Planning / by Daniel Ebner.

Author: Ebner, Daniel. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Previous research focused either on the relationship between strategic planning and performance or coordination mechanisms and performance. Therefore, a conceptually and empirically validated understanding of the interaction between these three factors is limited. This study addresses this gap in the literature by delivering three contributions to theory and empirical research: firstly, by clarifying and proposing the influences of strategic planning and strategic organization on the performance; secondly, by developing a model and associated hypotheses on both direct and interaction effects of strategic planning and coordination mechanisms; and thirdly, by testing the hypotheses. Findings regarding strategic planning suggest the coexistence of formal and informal strategic planning activities. Furthermore, results show that the relationship between strategic planning and performance is moderated by coordination mechanisms.  Contents      Corporate strategy Formal and informal strategic planning Organizational culture and organizational structure Coordination mechanisms   Target Groups Researchers and students in the field of organizational structure, organizational management and strategic management  Professionals in the field of organization/planning   The Author Daniel Ebner obtained his Master of Arts degree at Management Center Innsbruck (International Business and Law), Austria.

Author: Djurić, Dragan. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Dragan Djurić looks at strategy tools from a process-ontological worldview as proposed by the Process Organization Studies discourse. Building on Wittgenstein’s later philosophy he understands science and management as language games thereby developing a view of strategy tools as objects with both an ontological and a symbolic function. This perspective is contrasted with the traditional understanding of strategy tools as ‘technologies of rationality’ as well as with the practice-based view of strategy tools as ‘boundary objects’. Title: International Sourcing A Method to Create Corporate Success / by Daniel Senft.
Author: Senft, Daniel. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes: Globalization leads to increased fierce competition and successful global sourcing is an essential element for the economic development of companies. Global sourcing projects are, however, highly complex and two-thirds of all sourcing projects in Europe are considered to have failed. Daniel Senft generates a tool of ten steps to show how to evaluate the success of sourcing by considering the potentials and risks in an international context. The author demonstrates that successful managing of international sourcing does not only imply the primary goal to cheaply acquire parts abroad, but it can rather be seen as a kind of strategic weapon to create a strong market position and to keep the company successful on the long term.   The scientific research was awarded with the “BME-Hochschulpreis” and by the Hans-Wilhelm Renkhoff Foundation.   „The thesis is an outstanding achievement” Prof. Dr. Bernhard Arndt, Vice President, University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt   „The presented method offers fruitful ideas for practice” Dr. Thorsten Störmer, Purchasing Director, Miele & Cie. General Notes: InInsolvency Timing as an Agency Problem -- Financial Distress and Insolvency Timing.- Managerial Insolvency Timing Decision -- Experimental Testing of Interest Alignment Instruments.
Frederik Drescher addresses the timing of non-mandatory insolvency filings based on threatening illiquidity (§ 18 InsO) with the aim of a company's restructuring as an agency problem between owners and management. Using a decision model, the author develops the hypothesis of a tendency towards delayed insolvency filings and confirms it experimentally. Moreover, he analyzes different incentive instruments potentially leading to earlier insolvency filings.   Contents ·         Insolvency Timing as an Agency Problem ·         Financial Distress and Insolvency Timing ·         Managerial Insolvency Timing Decision ·         Experimental Testing of Interest Alignment Instruments       Target Groups ·         Researchers and students in the field of business economics with a focus on corporate restructuring and decision theory ·         Practitioners in corporate restructuring and insolvency professionals, managers and company owners     The Author Frederik Drescher holds a degree in Business Administration from WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management and wrote his doctoral thesis at Technische Universität München under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gunther Friedl.
