This study examines the ways in which war and memory are visualized in the graphic narratives A Game for Swallows To Die, To Leave, To Return (2012) by Zeina Abirached, Baddawi (2015) by Leila Abdelrazaq and Footnotes in Gaza (2009) by Joe Sacco. These works narrativize the trauma of being a refugee and experiencing war atrocities through graphic techniques that combine words and images in a narrative form. I compare the ways in which the protagonists in the novels reconstruct memories of the Lebanese Civil War in A Game for Swallows, being a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon in Baddawi, and the testimonies of eyewitnesses in Rafah and Khan Younis massacres in Footnotes in Gaza. This thesis adopts visual criticism in unpacking the dynamic interaction between verbal and visual narratives and authors’ use of visual devices, such as focalization. In comparing these three narratives, this study argues that Sacco’s representation of the memories of war is different from Abdelrazaq and Abirached’s, as his experiences are secondhand while theirs are firsthand.
تبحث هذه الدراسة في الطرق التي يتم من خلالها تصوير الحرب والذاكرة في الروايات المصورة "لعبة من أجل لسنونو: تموت وتغادر وتعود" بقلم زينة أبي راشد وبداوي بقلم ليلى عبد الرزاق وحواشي في غزة لجو ساكو. تسرد هذه الروايات الصدمة التي يعيشها اللاجيء من فظائع الحرب من خلال تقنيات الرسوم التي تجمع بين الصورة والكلمة في شكل سردي. وسأقارن بين الطرق التي يعيد بها أبطال الروايات بناء ذكريات الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية في لعبة من أجل السنونو ، وتجربة اللاجيء الفلسطيني في لبنان في بداوي ، وقصص شهود العيان من مذبحة رفح وخان يونس في حواشي في غزة. من خلال عقد دراسة مقارنة بين هذه النصوص ، تستنتج هذه الدراسة بأن هنالك اختلاف بين تصوير ساكو لذكريات الحرب لأن تجربته لها ليست شخصية في حين ، سرد أبي راشد وعبدالرزاق نابعة من تجربة شخصية لمعاناة اللجوء والحرب. ستتبنى هذه الرسالة النقد البصري كأسلوب تحليلي للتفاعل الديناميكي بين السرد اللفظي والمرئي واستخدام المؤلفين للتقنيات المرئية ، مثل التركيز.
