This thesis reports on a study that examines the impoliteness strategies used in the Jordanian parliamentary debates. The study covered the last two electoral terms extending from 2013-2020. It aims to find the most common impoliteness strategies in the analyzed parliamentary debates with reference to Culpeper's (1996) framework. Finally, the study aims to find whether the topic of the discussions in the parliamentary debates affected the occurrence of impoliteness strategies in the parliamentary sessions. The study adopts the framework of Culpeper (1996) in order to discover the impoliteness strategies utilized in this Jordanian political discourse. The data are collected from short video recordings taken from YouTube which included scenes on confrontations among the members of the parliament during the selected period. The findings revealed that four super-strategies were employed as face threatening acts: bald on record impoliteness, negative impoliteness, positive impoliteness and mock politeness. Withdraw politeness was not found in the examined confrontations. Topic is found to play a major role in the use of impoliteness strategies. The most commonly used super-strategy was negative impoliteness with almost 40% of the total use of impoliteness strategies. Two impoliteness output strategies were discovered: accusation and objection. Since these output strategies attack the addressee's negative face, they were included among the negative impoliteness output strategies. The current study
contributes to reveal the nature of the political discussions in the Jordanian parliamentary debates and helps the future politicians to adopt more efficient ways in their discussions where face threatening acts are less common.
تبحث هذه الدراسة في استراتيجيات عدم التأدب التي استخدمها أعضاء مجلس النواب الأردني، وذلك في الدورتين البرلمانيتين الأخيرتين في الفترة 2013 - 2020. وتهدف الدراسة إلى اكتشاف استراتيجيات عدم التأدب الأبرز في المناقشات البرلمانية. وبالتالي تحدد الدراسة فيما إذا كان موضوع المناقشات يؤثر على اختيار استراتيجيات عدم التأدب.
تتبنى الدراسة الإطار المعتمد لدى كالبيبر (1996) بهدف تحديد استراتيجيات عدم التأدب المستخدمة في السياق السياسي الأردني. وجُمعت هذه البيانات من تسجيلات فيديو قصيرة على موقع اليوتيوب والتي تحتوي على مواجهات بين أعضاء المجلس أثناء الفترة المذكورة. وتظهر نتائج الدراسة استخدام أربع استراتيجيات كبرى بوصفها أفعالا مهددة للوجاهة، وهي: عدم التأدب الصريح، عدم التأدب السلبي، عدم التأدب الإيجابي، والتهذيب الساخر، في حين لم يستخدم الانسحاب من التأدب في هذه المناقشات. وهناك مواضيع حساسة وخطيرة كان لها دور كبير في استخدام استراتيجيات عدم التأدب.
أما أكثر الاستراتيجيات استخداما فكانت عدم التأدب السلبي بحوالي 40 % من مجموع الأمثلة. وظهرت إستراتيجيتان في حاصل عدم التأدب، وهما الاتهام والاعتراض. وبما أنهما تهاجمان الوجاهة السلبية للمخاطب، فقد أدرجتا ضمن استراتيجيات حاصل عدم التأدب السلبي. تساهم الدراسة بالكشف عن طبيعة النقاشات السياسية البرلمانية في الأردن كما تساهم هذه الدراسة بمساعدة سياسيي المستقبل لتبني أساليب أكثر فاعلية في النقاشات بحيث تتجنب تقديم الإساءة.
