Abstract : This thesis aims at investigating the main elements of Science Fiction in a selection of Arabic and English novels, namely The Adventures of Sayf Ben Dhī Yazan (1992), The Second War of The Dog (2016) by Ibrahim Nasrallah, and 1984 (1949) by George Orwell. Relying on a number of related definitions of Science Fiction and considering the undeniable similarity between The Second War of the Dog and 1984, the thesis argues that the anonymous Arabic narrative, The Adventures of Sayf Ben Dhī Yazan, and Nasrallah’s The Second War of The Dog incorporate several elements of Science Fiction, which suggests that Arab writers have deployed many elements of the Science Fiction genre much earlier than modern readers may assume. To achieve this goal, the thesis elaborates on certain quotes and excerpts regarding the main elements of Science Fiction, namely the themes, characters, and setting emphasizing how they create together an atmosphere of Science Fiction. The thesis concludes that some Arab writers have incorporated the elements of Science Fiction in their creative pieces since the dawn of history to express their futuristic viewpoints and articulate their political orientations.
