The present study investigates the linguistic and nonlinguistic realization of verbal abuse against healthcare providers in three Jordanian governmental hospitals: Al-Salt Hospital; AlZarqa Hospital; and Al-Basheer Hospital. The study follows a descriptive approach. It relies on data collected from 150 healthcare providers using a written questionnaire over a period of three weeks. Participants are selected based on their acceptance to take part in the study. The study also uses data generated through a series of observations for 85 perpetrators in the three hospitals. The data is quantitatively analyzed using SPSS version (24) and qualitatively using content analysis for the type of verbal abuse of the perpetrators, for the body gestures and for the reasons behind verbal violence. The results show that the patients’ moral system, environment, culture, and lack of respect towards healthcare providers had the highest level of influence on the problem of verbal abuse against healthcare providers. Furthermore, it is found that verbal abuse is divided into nine types. Yelling is the most used verbal abuse against healthcare providers in Jordan. Finally, staring and frowning are the most used body gestures before and during verbal abuse. In conclusion, the results of this study could be an addition to the literature that may help the researchers in the medical field. The results are also useful for healthcare providers to be aware of signs, behaviors, and gestures that may lead to verbal violence and abuse.
تبحث هذه الدراسة في الإساءة الشفهية ضد مقدمي الرعاية الطبية في المستشفيات الحكومية الأردنية الثلاثة وهي مستشفى السلط ومستشفى الزرقاء ومستشفى البشير وذلك باستخدام المنحى الوصفي للبحث. تعتمد الدراسة على البيانات التي جمعت من ۱٥۰ من مقدمي الرعاية الطبية، ٥۰ مشاركًا في كل مستشفى، وذلك خلال ثلاتة أسابيع وباستخدام استبيان مكتوب. كما وتعتمد الدراسة على الملاحظات المدونة من سلسلة من المراقبات التي تمت على عينة من 85 معتد في المستشفيات الثلاثة. تم تحليل البيانات كميّا باستخدام SPSS إصدار(24) وتحليلها نوعيّا باستخدام تحليل المحتوى لنوع الإساءة الشفهية الصادرة من المعتدين. وقد تم ايضا تحليل إيماءاتهم الجسدية تحليلا احصائيا. تظهر النتائج أن النظام الأخلاقي للمرضى والبيئة والثقافة وعدم الاحترام لمقدمي الرعاية الطبية كان لها أعلى مستوى من التأثير على مشكلة الإساءة الشفهية ضد مقدمي الرعاية الطبية. علاوة على ذلك، وجد أن الإساءة الشفهية تنقسم إلى تسعة أنواع اهمها - الصراخ حيث يعد من الإساءات الشفهية الأكثر استخدامًا ضد مقدمي الرعاية الطبية في الأردن. وأخيرًا، يعد التحديق والعبوس أكثر إيماءات الجسد استخدامًا قبل وأثناء الإساءة الشفهية. في الختام، يمكن أن تكون نتائج هذه الدراسة إضافة إلى الدراسات السابقة التي قد تساعد الباحثين في المجال الطبي. إن هذه النتائج مفيدة أيضًا لمقدمي الرعاية الطبية ليكونوا على دراية بالعلامات والسلوكيات والإيماءات التي قد تؤدي إلى العنف اللفظي وسوء المعاملة.
