This thesis examines the three novels The Fall of the Imam by Nawal Al Saadawi, Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa’ Al-Sanea and The Silence of Butterflies by Laila Al-Othman. These novels have faced various forms (state and cultural) of restrictions in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. It explores family and social limitations imposed on Arab women’s freedom of expression generally and these authors specifically. It illustrates how family members such as fathers, mothers and husbands function as censors. This censorship not only applies to the writings of Arab women but also extends to a general silencing of women, thus depriving them from freely expressing themselves. This examination has been conducted through a close reading of the three novels; taking into consideration the biographical background of the writer and the context of the novel itself. Accordingly, these three authors have used different structures and explored various themes to convey the cultural restrictions and silencing of women in their countries and to highlight the limitations imposed upon them whether by the family, society or state.
Furthermore, this thesis examines the state laws that have targeted, and limited, women’s freedom of expression in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait through a detailed study of published sources, censorship lists and newspaper articles. The reasons and motivations behind censoring books and whether the laws of censorship change according to gender are likewise considered.
تدرس هذه الرسالة ثلاثة روايات خاضعة للرقابة و هي سقوط الامام للكاتبة نوال السعداوي و بنات الرياض للكاتبة رجاء الصانع و صمت الفراشات للكاتبة ليلى العثمان. حيث واجهت هذه الروايات أنماط مختلفة من الرقابة من قبل الدولة و المجتمع في مصر و السعودية و الكويت. تبحث هذه الدراسة في القيود العائلية و المجتمعية التي تحدد و تعيق حرية التعبير لدى المرأة العربية بشكل عام و هؤلاء الكاتبات بشكل خاص. حيث توضح هذه الرسالة دور افراد العائلة من اباء و امهات و ازواج في تحديد حرية التعبير للمرأة و اخضاعها للرقابة. هذه الرقابة لا تختصر على كتابات المرأة العربية بل تشمل اسكات المرأة و منعها من التعبير بحرية عن نفسها.
تمت هذه الدراسة من خلال قراءة مفصلة و دقيقة للروايات الثلاث مع الأخذ بعين الاعتبار السيرة الذاتية للكاتبة و السياق التي نشرت فيه الرواية .حيث استخدمت هؤلاء الكاتبات اساليب مختلفة و قمن بتناول مواضيع متنوعة للكشف عن القيود المجتمعية التي تتعرض لها المرأة العربية و تجبرها على الصمت في بلادهن ، متحدين بذلك المحددات و القيود المفروضة عليهم من قبل الدولة و المجتمع و العائلة.
بالاضافة لذلك، قامت هذه الرسالة بدراسة القوانين التي تستهدف حرية المرأة للتعبير و تقيدها في مصر و السعودية و الكويت من خلال دراسة مفصلة للمصادر المنشورة و قوائم الرقابة و مقالات الجرائد. تباعا، عملت الرسالة على البحث في اسباب منع الكتب و معاينة مدى تغير قوانين الرقابة بالتعامل مع الكاتبات العربيات و أعمالهن.
