Rural provides an advanced introduction to the study of rural places and processes in geography and related disciplines. Drawing ... on the latest research in rural geography, this book explores the diverse meanings that have been attached to the rural, examines how ideas of the rural have been produced and reproduced, and investigates the influence of different ideas in shaping the social and economic structure of rural localities and the everyday lives of people who live, work or play in rural areas.... [C]ontains case studies drawn from both the developed and developing world to introduce and illustrate conceptual ideas and approaches, as well as suggested further reading.--From publisher description.

The main objectives of this research are to identify the main challenges and success factors for the electrification process using a solar water pumping system for small farmers in the Jordan Valley. Accordingly, the purpose of the study is to identify the possibilities of providing electricity by relying on renewable energy sources in the northern Jordan Valley from a technical and economic point of view. The study also compares the economic performance of pumping groundwater for irrigation using two energy solutions: solar photovoltaics (PV) and diesel.
The case study is actually conducted on a medium farm located in the northern Jordan Valley with an approximate area of 4,046 square meters. The analysis, modeling and simulation of a large scale solar or diesel water pumping system was done using some useful tools such as Excel program, and a life cycle cost per unit of energy system for crop irrigation method scenarios. Thus, a 115m deep well is proposed which needs a 4 KW pump and 5 KW PV. The data collection to the project work are collected through the Literature Survey, Market Survey, and Questionnaire and Interviews. The questionnaire was conducted through scientific and practical questions based on the experiences of specialists from Universities, Companies working in the field of decentralized renewables.
The results shows that solar water pumping system is highly recommended in rural areas such as the northern Ghor in the Jordan Valley for many reasons. First, it costs about three times less compared to diesel water pumping systems over 6 years. Secondly, solar electricity prices are separated from global market prices for gas and fuel, without all the market interventions that oil-producing countries are currently resorting to.
