Explores the practical applicability of the philosophy of science to scientific research, but also considers its relevance to practice within the realms of technology, design, crafts, and even within the world of arts and the humanities. The attempt to engage working scientists with the issues raised by the philosophy of science may profitably be extended to examine its applicability to any other fields of knowledge that encompass a problem-solving dimension. Drawing on his experience as a research and development scientist in the biomedical device industry, the author shows how the principles of the philosophy of science illuminate the research process. The book is structured on the concept of the inspirational text; it consists of short chapters, each of which provides an accessible discussion of an aspect of the philosophy of science. Each chapter concludes with a list of practical pointers towards the development of attitudes and skills which will benefit the student researcher.

Basic cell culture : a practical approach / edited by J.M. Davis.
Practical approach series ;
Author:
David, J. M. (John M.)
General Notes:
Includes bibliographical references and index.
In the last 20 years cell culture has developed enormously from being used only in specialized areas of research to being the cornerstone of probably the world's fastest-growing industry, biotechnology. The primary aim of this book is to guide the newcomer progressively through all those areas which nowadays are fundamental to the performance of cell culture. The book will also prove useful to the experienced worker. Topics covered include setting up and equipping a cell culture laboratory, sterilization of fluids and equipment, culture media, culture technique, the maintenance of cell lines, primary culture and the isolation of new cell lines, specific cell types and their requirements, single cell cloning, quality control of cell lines and the prevention, detection, and cure of contamination, and good laboratory practice in the cell culture laboratory.

This volume discusses adolescent mental health concerns in non-Western contexts and situations, ranging from common mental disorders to building life skills. It combines previous literature and empirical work on various disorders to provide a comprehensive account of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for adolescents. The volume covers a wide spectrum of conditions, ranging from anxiety to affective disorders and other associated disorders. It gives a practical guide to the management of disorders with specific focus on case vignettes, outlining session details and specific techniques to be used throughout the intervention plan. A detailed appendix elaborating various CBT techniques is included in the volume. It presumes a basic understanding and training in mental health care and psychotherapy and is useful for professionals: psychologists, counsellors, paediatricians and other practitioners in the field of mental health. It is also useful as a text for courses in health psychology, clinical psychology, adolescent medicine and adolescent psychology.

A Practical Approach to Compiler Construction by Des Watson.

Watson, Des. author.
SpringerLink (Online service)
General Notes:
Preface -- List of Figures -- Introduction -- Compilers and Interpreters -- Lexical Analysis -- Approaches to Syntax Analysis -- Practicalities of Syntax Analysis -- Semantic Analysis and Intermediate Code -- Optimisation -- Code Generation -- Implementation Issues -- Appendix: The DL Language -- Index .
This book provides a practically-oriented introduction to high-level programming language implementation. It demystifies what goes on within a compiler and stimulates the reader's interest in compiler design, an essential subject of computer science. Programming language analysis and translation techniques are used in many software application areas. A Practical Approach to Compiler Construction covers the fundamental principles of the subject in an accessible way. It presents the necessary background theory and shows how how it can be applied to implement complete compilers. A step-by-step approach, based on a standard compiler structure is adopted, presenting up-to-date techniques and examples. Strategies and designs are described in detail to guide the reader in implementing a translator for a programming language. A simple high-level language, loosely based on C, is used to illustrate aspects of the compilation process. Code examples in C are included, together with discussion and illustration of how this code can be extended to cover the compilation of more complex languages. Examples are also given of the use of the flex and bison compiler construction tools. Lexical and syntax analysis is covered in detail together with a comprehensive coverage of semantic analysis, intermediate representations, optimisation and code generation. Introductory material on parallelisation is also included. Designed for personal study as well as for use in introductory undergraduate and postgraduate courses in compiler design, the author assumes that readers have a reasonable competence in programming in any high-level language. .

Although the exergy method has been featured as the subject of many publishing papers in scientific and engineering journals and at conferences, very few comprehensive books on this subject have been published so far. Practical Approach to Exergy and Thermoeconomic Analyses of Industrial Processes details the exergetic and thermoeconomic analyses of industrial processes using Aspen Plus and a novel Microsoft Excel Application developed by the authors which can be applied to industrial processes across the board. Employing a practical approach to an innovative and complex energy process, every chapter contains extensive explanations of a complex and real case and numerous examples whose solution demonstrates the application of theory to a wide range of real and practical problems. Illustrations, tables and graphs support and illustrate the new methodology to build a deep understanding of the real employment of the fuel used and the cost formation and increase inside the process. Practical Approach to Exergy and Thermoeconomic Analyses of Industrial Processes provides users, students and practitioners of process analysis, power plant design and fuel use optimization, with a broad introduction and approach to computer aided process optimization. It also serves as a comprehensive guide to the operational application of the MHBT to real cases analysis.

Practical Approach to Peripheral Arterial Chronic Total Occlusions edited by Subhash Banerjee.

Comparative Assessment of Crossing and Re-entry Devices in Treating Chronic Total Occlusions for Femoropopliteal and Below the Knee Interventions -- 7. Complications of Peripheral Arterial Interventions.
A practical, highly illustrative and easy to read reference for interventional cardiologists, vascular surgeons, cardiac/endovascular catheterization laboratory personnel, interventional radiologists, technical staff, industry professionals, investigators, and researchers on peripheral arterial CTO interventions. Peripheral CTO lesions are present in nearly 50% of all peripheral arterial disease (PAD) endovascular interventions. There is tremendous growth in the performance and learning of peripheral arterial CTO procedures. There are several ongoing physician courses and many others that are being prepared; however, there is a significant lack of standardized selection, strategies, techniques and equipment necessary to achieve a high degree of reproducible success with low complication rates during the performance of these complex and technically challenging endovascular procedures. The book is not an academic “tour de force” description of the topic but rather a practical one with many illustrations and step-by-step explanations of the various procedure steps, what can go wrong, and troubleshooting. Heavy use of illustrations throughout limit the text to what is necessary to convey the message, and the book is supported by online case catalogues and board review questions. The book also includes never-before-published information on new technology.
