General Notes: Chapter 1. Beginning of Journey -- Chapter 2.Engagement and Fun -- Chapter 3. What Is a Game? -- Chapter 4.What is Gamification in Learning and Education? -- Chapter 5.Theories for Gamification in Learning and Education -- Chapter 6.Students’ Perception of Gamification in Learning and Education -- Chapter 7.Gamification Framework -- Chapter 8.Gamification Strategy -- Chapter 9.Legal and Ethical Issues -- Chapter 10. Gamification Cases in Education -- Chapter 11.Gamification Cases in STEM Education -- Chapter 12.Gamification Cases in Liberal Arts and Social Science Education -- Chapter 13.Gamify Your Instruction.
This book explores the theoretical foundations of gamification in learning and education. It has become increasingly difficult to engage and motivate students. Gamification not only makes learning interesting, but also allows game players to solve problems and learn lessons through repeated attempts and failures. This "positive failure" can motivate students to attempt a difficult mission. Chapters in this volume cover topics such as the definition and characteristics of gamification, gamification in learning and education, theories, research on gamification, framework, strategy, and cases.

General Notes: Preface -- Theory of gamma-ray resonant scattering by the nuclei situated in the magnetic field -- Experimental research of gamma ray resonant scattering -- Problem of gamma resonant excitation of the long-lived isomeric nuclear states -- The grounds of gravitational gamma spectrometry -- Nuclear resonant scattering of annihilation quanta.
This book presents the basics and advanced topics of research of gamma ray physics. It describes measuring of Fermi surfaces with gamma resonance spectroscopy and the theory of angular distributions of resonantly scattered gamma rays. The dependence of excited-nuclei average lifetime on the shape of the exciting-radiation spectrum and electron binding energies in the spectra of scattered gamma rays is described. Resonant excitation by gamma rays of nuclear isomeric states with long lifetime leads to the emission and absorption lines. In the book, a new gamma spectroscopic method, gravitational gamma spectrometry, is developed. It has a resolution hundred million times higher than the usual Mössbauer spectrometer. Another important topic of this book is resonant scattering of annihilation quanta by nuclei with excited states in connection with positron annihilation. The application of the methods described is to explain the phenomenon of Coulomb fragmentation of gamma-source molecules and resonant scattering of annihilation quanta to study the shape of Fermi surfaces of metals.

This collection of papers takes linguists to the leading edge of techniques in generative lexicon theory, the linguistic composition methodology that arose from the imperative to provide a compositional semantics for the contextual modifications in meaning that emerge in real linguistic usage. Today’s growing shift towards distributed compositional analyses evinces the applicability of GL theory, and the contributions to this volume, presented at three international workshops (GL-2003, GL-2005 and GL-2007) address the relationship between compositionality in language and the mechanisms of selection in grammar that are necessary to maintain this property. The core unresolved issues in compositionality, relating to the interpretation of context and the mechanisms of selection, are treated from varying perspectives within GL theory, including its basic theoretical mechanisms and its analytical viewpoint on linguistic phenomena.

Title: Advances in Genetics, Genomics and Control of Rice Blast Disease edited by Guo-Liang Wang, Barbara Valent.

SpringerLink (Online service)

General Notes:
Rice blast, caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe grisea, is one of the most destructive rice diseases worldwide and destroys enough rice to feed more than 60 million people annually. Due to high variability of the fungal population in the field, frequent loss of resistance of newly-released rice cultivars is a major restraint in sustainable rice production. In the last few years, significant progress has been made in understanding the defense mechanism of rice and pathogenicity of the fungus. The rice blast system has become a model pathosystem for understanding the molecular basis of plant-fungal interactions due to the availability of both genomes of rice and M. grisea and a large collection of genetic resources. This book provides a complete review of the recent progress and achievements on genetic, genomic and disease control of the disease. Most of the chapters were presented at the 4th International Rice Blast Conference held on October 9-14, 2007 in Changsha, China. This book is a valuable reference not only for plant pathologists and breeders working on rice blast but also for those working on other pathysystems in crop plants.

General Notes:
Part 1. Non-standard spatial statistics -- 1. Introduction: spatial statistics, - 2. Individual versus ecological analyses -- 3. Statistical models for spatial data: some linkages and communalities -- 4. Frequency distributions for simulated spatially autorcorrelated random variable -- 5. Understanding correlations among spatial random variables -- 6. Spatially structured random effects: a comparison of three popular specifications -- 7. Spatial filter versus conventional spatial model specifications: some comparisons -- 8. The role of spatial of autocorrelation in prioritizing sites within a geographic landscape -- 9. General spatial statistics conclusions -- 10. References: spatial statistics (Part 1) Part 2. Non-standard spatial econometrics -- 11. Introduction: spatial econometrics -- 12. Mixed linear-logarithmetic specification for Lotka-Volterra models with endogenously generated SDLS-variables -- 13. Selecting spatial regimes by threshold analysis -- 14. Finite automata -- 15 Learning from residuals -- 16. Verhulst and Poisson distributions -- 17. QUARLIREG: qualitative regression and its application to spatial data -- 18. Filtering complexity for observational errors and spatial bias -- 19. General spatial econometrics conclusions -- 20. References: spatial econometrics (Part 2).
.
Despite spatial statistics and spatial econometrics both being recent sprouts of the general tree "spatial analysis with measurement"—some may remember the debate after WWII about "theory without measurement" versus "measurement without theory"—several general themes have emerged in the pertaining literature. But exploring selected other fields of possible interest is tantalizing, and this is what the authors intend to report here, hoping that they will suscitate interest in the methodologies exposed and possible further applications of these methodologies. The authors hope that reactions about their publication will ensue, and they would be grateful to reader(s) motivated by some of the research efforts exposed hereafter letting them know about these experiences.

In this book, an interdisciplinary research group of faculty members, researchers, professionals, and planners contributed to an understanding of the dynamics and dimensions of emerging challenges and risks in megacities in the rapidly changing urban environments in Asia and examined emerging resilience themes from the point of view of sustainability and public policy. The world’s urban population in 2009 was approximately 3.4 billion and Asia’s urban population was about 1.72 billion. Between 2010 and 2020, 411 million people will be added to Asian cities (60% of the growth in the world’s urban population). By 2020, of the world’s urban population of 4.2 billion, approximately 2.2 billion will be in Asia. China and India will contribute 31.3% of the total world urban population by 2025. Developing Asia’s projected global share of CO2 emissions from energy consumption will increase from 30% in 2006 to 43% by 2030. City regions serve as magnets for people, enterprise, and culture, but with urbanisation, the worst form of visible poverty becomes prominent. The Asian region, with a slum population of an estimated 505.5 million people, remains host to over half of the world’s slum population. The book provides information on a comprehensive range of environmental threats faced by the inhabitants of megacities. It also offers a wide range of case studies with transdisciplinary approach to rapidly growing megacities (with populations of more than 5 million) from developed and developing countries of Asia.

This book is an initiative presented by the Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union. It focuses particularly on what has been learned from geospatial projects and research from the past decades of implementing geospatial technologies (GST) in formal and informal education. The objective of this publication is to inform an international audience of teachers, professionals, scholars, and policymakers about the state of the art and prospects of geospatial practices (GPs) as organized activities that use GST and lessons learned in relation to geographical education. GST make up an advanced body of knowledge developed by practitioners of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS), global positioning systems, (GPS), and digital cartography (DC). GST have long been applied in many different sectors; however, their first use in higher education began in the early 1980s and then diffused to secondary schools during the 1990s. Starting with GIS and RS, it evolved into a much broader context, as GST expanded to include GPS and DC with new communication technologies and Internet applications. GST have been used around the world as a combination of tools and special techniques to make research, teaching, and learning more effective.

The over-exploitation of important earth resources such as land and water has led to a number of environment-related problems the world over. At the same time, land-use change caused by various human activities has led to extinction of many plant and animal habitats and species. In this context, the relevance of biodiversity for human survival is becoming a major international political issue as scientific evidence builds on the global health implications of biodiversity loss. These issues are closely linked with the issue of climate change, as many of the health risks due to climate change are associated with rapid degradation of biodiversity. This present work focuses on holistic natural resource-based spatio-temporal planning, development, and management and considers them as essential to save the degraded ecosystem for sustainable resource management. Contributions are compiled in two volumes: 1. Climate Change and Biodiversity, and 2. Landscape Ecology and Water Management. Geoinformatics along with its tools such as remote sensing and geographical information systems (GIS) have been used in assessing the results of various environmental problems both physical and social. The volume will be useful for geographers, geoscientists, hydrologists, landscape ecologists, environmentalists, engineers, planners, and policy makers.

This volume synthesizes critical environmental challenges of dynamic earth and human environment systems in South Asia emphasizing geographical dimensions. It deals with spaceborne monitoring, climate, ecohydrology, forests and biodiversity, land-use and land-cover change (LUCC), natural hazards, and disasters in order to contribute towards a sustainable future. The contributions range from traditional field techniques to the use of remote sensing and geographic information systems. The book integrates environmental attributes relating the past, present, and future of South Asia broadly based on biophysical and human dimensions in spatio-temporal perspectives. The monitoring of natural hazards and climate issues is considered a vital component in the context of environmental geography, especially in observation and understanding of climate and water-induced disasters. It is important to communicate the advances in geoscience techniques to increase the resilience of the vulnerable society of South Asia and to promote livelihood security. The sustainability of South Asia depends strongly on the earth environment, and thus the development of geo-environmental monitoring is critical for a better understanding of our living environment. The aim of the book is to present dynamic aspects of environmental geography to contribute to future earth initiatives in South Asia.

General Notes: Human Mobility: An Issue of Multidisciplinary Research -- Elusive Migration Systems: Shifting from transnationalism to transregionalism -- Migration and Borders: Empirical Patterns and Theoretical Implications in the Case of Spain -- Challenges Facing Refugee Women: A Critical Review -- Immigration Policies and Integration Models in Canada -- Conflicting Approaches and Converging Trends -- Latin American Migration, Residential Patterns and Social Cohesion in Argentina Cities -- The Integration of Immigrants in France. -Economic and Geographical Approach -- "Young and small" Thai immigration into Czechia: Wives of Czechs versus migrant workers -- Labor Mobility to the Promised Land: Hungarian Migrants’ Experiences in the United Kingdom -- Accompanying the Stranger in a Context of Political Impasse and Constraints: New Sanctuary Movement Philadelphia -- Going Abroad to Get Ahead: The Emigration of Spanish Young Adults during the Financial Crisis (2008-2013) -- New “Guest workers” from Spain? Exploring Migration to Germany in the Context of Economic and Societal Change -- Student on the Move. Academic Career and Life Transitions of Foreign PhD Students in Barcelona (Spain) -- International Mobility of Brazilian Students to Portugal: The Role of the Brazilian Government and University Strategies in Portugal.-Globalizing Rural Areas. - International Migrants in Rural Germany -- Causal relationships between economic dynamics and migration: Romania as case study -- The Human Mobility as Strategy Facing the Volcanic Risks: The case of Ilha do Fogo (Cape Verde).
This book demonstrates the benefits of applying a new interdisciplinary approach that combines global change and human mobility. The term "globility" was coined in the year 2000 when the commission with the same name was created by the International Geographical Union with the purpose of theorizing about and asserting the concept of human mobility. First the book offers theoretical reviews of human mobility. Then it proceeds to study patterns of mobility in today's world as it faces new challenges in migration policies (including border controls, management of refugee movements, social initiatives to empower unauthorized immigrants), the integration issue, environmental hazards, and so on. The response to these diverse challenges reveals an increasing fluidity of human mobility and new forms of engagement of people on the move. Readers will obtain a better understanding of current human mobility from a large number of regions and from different thematic perspectives.

General Notes: Geomorphology and Society: an Introduction -- Geomorphology in the Anthropocene: Perspectives from the Past, Pointers for the Future -- Society and Geomorphology: Addressing the (Mis-)Use of Aggregate Resources -- Geomorphological Responses in a Dynamic Environment: How Landforms Interact with Human Activities in Taiwan -- The Impact of Typhoon Morakot in 2009 on Landslides, Debris Flows and Population in the Chishan River Catchment, Taiwan -- Delineation of Historical Fluvial Territories and the Implications for Flood Mitigation, with Reference to Four Selected Reaches in Taiwan -- The Political Ecology of Land Subsidence: a Case Study of the Solar Energy-Farming Scheme, Pingtung County, Taiwan -- Towards Long-lasting Disaster Mitigation following a Mega-landslide: High-definition Topographic Measurements of Sediment Production by Debris Flows in a Steep Headwater Channel -- Landslide Typology using a Morphological Approach and Establishment of an Inventory Map based on Aerial Photo Interpretation in Central Vietnam -- Vulnerability and Exposure to Geomorphic Hazards: Some Insights from the Europoean Alps -- Reclamation and Land Consolidation Effects on Organic Matter Sedimentation in Lake Giba-gata, Japan -- Impact of Short-term Flooding on Livelihoods in the Central Kenya Rife Valley Lakes -- Rainfall Erosivity and Soil Erosion Risk Assessment in Tropical Island Environments: a Case Study of Mauritius -- Evolution of a coastal beach/barrier/marsh system in response to sea level rise, storm events and human impacts: a case study of Trunvel Marsh, Western Brittany -- Integrating estuarine, coastal and inner shelf sediment systems in a common conceptual framework as a basis for participatory shoreline management.
This book deals with the relationship between geomorphology and society. This topic has had rather scant treatment in the literature except to some extent under the label “applied geomorphology”. In this text the authors aim to bring together conceptual issues and case studies of how geomorphology influences society and, indeed, how society is in turn influenced by geomorphology. In an age in which the influence of human activities on global environments has become so paramount that it is increasingly common to refer to it geologically as the “anthropocene”, the book aims to reflect on the geomorphological significance of widespread and diverse forms of human impact in a range of environmental settings.
