This multi-chapter book focuses on one of the hottest topics in ageing research – the role of hormones in health and longevity, offering a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of their mechanistic roles in health, ageing and longevity. Hormones are an excellent system of communication between cells and tissues within an organism, and they coordinate a wide range of processes in biological systems, including neuroendocrine and immunological controls. The book offers insights into the latest significant advances in our understanding of the mechanisms of hormonal signaling that control a variety of processes involved in development and ageing. It is divided into four parts: Part I includes a review of the hundred-year history of hormones by the illustrious hormone biochemist Dr. J.R. Tata. Part II presents various chapters on the hormones involved in growth, stress and metabolism, while Part III addresses the hormones controlling cognition and rhythms in ageing processes. Lastly, Part IV discusses the hormones affecting reproduction, immunity and life span. It also explores the use of hormones as pharmaceuticals to maintain health in the elderly. It is a valuable resource for those working in the area of hormone signaling in general and in the field of ageing research in particular.

The environment of the fetus in the womb is emerging as a key determinant not only of its immediate status but also of the offspring’s long-term well-being. This largely started with reports of striking epidemiological associations between lower, but still normal, birth weight and a marked increase in the incidence of cardiac, metabolic and neuropsychiatric disorders from childhood to senescence. In seeking to explain these observations, collectively referred to as ‘developmental programming,’ a new subfield of biology has emerged. Major discoveries include detailing the etiological roles of maternal factors such as nutrition, inflammatory disease, stress and psychopathology. Key biochemical mediators have been discovered, notably including hormones such as glucocorticoids, which act on both the fetus and the placenta to change the trajectory of growth, tissue maturation and the expression of specific genes in affected cells. Such persisting changes in the transcription of genes may be in part underpinned by epigenetic changes. The mechanisms of these effects are beginning to emerge and offer the prospect of new diagnostics, biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets. This work provides an accessible and cutting-edge view of this rapidly emerging field.

"Independent filmmaker and horror-film scholar John Kenneth Muir says, 'Art does not exist in a vacuum. Instead, it is inexorably bound to the time period from which it sprang.' In his entertaining and scholarly filmography of over 200 films arranged by year, Muir sees the historical and social happenings of the 1970s as giving rise to the unusually high number of groundbreaking horror films of the decade, as well as the more routine ones. Following a general introduction, Muir provides a synopsis and commentary, a list of cast and crew, significant quotations by critics for each motion picture as well as by participants in the film's making when available, and stills for selected films. Interesting appendixes, notes, a bibliography, and an index are included."--"The Best of the Best Reference Sources," American Libraries, May 2003.
