This book provides new theoretical insights to our understanding of play as a cultural activity. All chapters address play and playful activities from a cultural-historical theoretical approach by re-addressing central claims and concepts in the theory and providing new models and understandings of the phenomenon of play within the framework of cultural historical theory. Empirical studies cover a wide range of institutional settings: preschool, school, home, leisure time, and in various social relations (with peers, professionals and parents) in different parts of the world (Europe, Australia, South America and North America). Common to all chapters is a goal of throwing new light on the phenomenon of playing within a theoretical framework of cultural-historical theory. Play as a cultural, collective, social, personal, pedagogical and contextual activity is addressed with reference to central concepts in relation to development and learning. Concepts and phenomena related to ZPD, the imaginary situation, rules, language play, collective imagining, spheres of realities of play, virtual realities, social identity and pedagogical environments are presented and discussed in order to bring the cultural-historical theoretical approach into play with contemporary historical issues. Essential as a must read to any scholar and student engaged with understanding play in relation to human development, cultural historical theory and early childhood education.

This book examines a critical period in British children’s publishing, from the earliest days of dedicated publishing firms for Black British audiences to the beginnings of the Black Lives Matter movement in the UK. Taking a historical approach that includes education acts, Black protest, community publishing and children’s literature prizes, the study investigates the motivation behind both independent and mainstream publishing firm decisions to produce books for a specifically Black British audience. Beginning with a consideration of early reading schemes that incorporated Black and Asian characters, the book continues with a history of one of the earliest presses to publish for children, Bogle L’Ouverture. Other chapters look at the influence of community-based and independent presses, the era of multiculturalism and anti-racism, the effect of racially-motivated violence on children’s publishing, and the dubious benefit of awards for Black British publishing. The volume will appeal to children’s literature scholars, librarians, teachers, education-policy makers and Black British historians.

This book draws on a longitudinal study which highlights the beneficial impact of film in the primary curriculum. It provides detailed accounts of both the reading process as understood within the field of literacy education, and of film theory as it relates to issues such as narration, genre and audience. The book focuses on a small cohort of children to explore how progression in reading film develops throughout a child’s time in Key Stage 2; it also examines how the skills and understanding required to read film can support the reading of print, and vice versa, in an ‘asset model’ approach. Since children’s progression in reading film is found to be not necessarily age-related, but rather built on a period of experience and opportunity to read and/or create moving image media, Bulman clearly illustrates the importance of the inclusion of film in the primary curriculum. The book provides an accessible study to a large audience of primary teachers and practitioners, and will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in the fields of education, English and media studies.

This research illustrates the policies adopted by Ministry of Education and the extent of their application on the field, as it is based mainly on the annual reports of the National Center for Human Rights in Jordan since its establishment in 2013 and till 2018.At the same time it also based on the annual reports and plans of Ministry of Education and what has been achieved.in addition the qualitative approach is also used since the researcher has depend on his personal experience in teaching at the public school for more than five years .
The purpose of this study is to explore the situation of children's right to education in Jordan where the researcher tries to explore the weaknesses and strengths of policies applied to implement this right.
Researcher found that Jordan had made enormous efforts in implementing right to education at compulsory stage during 2003-2018. But there were obstacles and emergency conditions during the process of progress and achievement such as; the huge number of children's refugees from neighboring countries, limited of resources and shortage of funding.
At the same time, the researcher hopes on Ministry of Education to overcome repeated criticism. Researcher advise more efforts to achieve on; mandatory early childhood education, the provision of modern school buildings, maintenance of existing buildings, compensate for the shortage of teachers, improve the performance of teachers and improve their economic situation , to integrate persons with disabilities, develop and modify curricula in line with international scientific standards, to provide a fair opportunity for all students in Jordan regardless of their nationality, fight violence and bullying and eliminate school dropout and child labor.

While the digital world brings countless opportunities, it also poses significant challenges and risks for children's rights and protection. In Jordan, as in many other countries, the increasing digitalization of society necessitates a comprehensive examination of the impact on children and the measures in place to safeguard their well-being.
This thesis raises the primary question if the children of Jordan enjoy their right of access to a safe and equitable digital environment. The three secondary questions investigate the current laws ability to protect the right in the digital environment, non-governmental organizations support to this right, and safe and equitable access to online platforms by children in Jordanian underdeveloped areas.
The study followed qualitative research methods to attain to its results through literature review, semi-structured interviews and focus groups. The study identified findings that may prevent children from fully enjoying their right to safely access the digital environment in Jordan such as exposure to inappropriate content, bullying, and improper investment in children’s time. Additionally, the study showed a lack of awareness amongst children and parents concerning the legal framework that protects children from harm while navigating the digital world. Furthermore, the available framework in Jordan has been viewed as insufficient in some perspectives. Although the research found adequate knowledge pertaining internet usage threats, risk mitigation of those sounded relatively inadequate amongst children. The research emphasized that these gaps can be bridged through the provision of digital environment-related services and collaboration among all relevant stakeholders, including parents, and children themselves.

It addresses theoretical questions linked to children’s agency and reflexivity, education, the life cycle perspective, child participation, evolving capabilities, and citizenship. The volume highlights important issues that have to be taken into account for the implementation of human rights and the development of peoples’ capabilities. The focus on children’s capabilities along a rights-based approach is an inspiring perspective that researchers and practitioners in the field of human rights would like to deepen.

The space to do something different -- Policy and practice reflections -- Conclusion.
"This book challenges the concept of wellbeing as applied to children, particularly in a school-based context. Taking a post-structural approach, it suggests that wellbeing should be understood, and experiences revealed, at the level of the subjective child. This runs counter to contemporary accounts that reduce children's wellbeing to objective lists of things that are needed in order to live well. This book will be useful for academics and practitioners working directly with children, and anyone interested in children's wellbeing."--Publisher's website.

Children's stress and coping : a family perspective / Elaine Shaw Sorensen.
Perspectives on marriage and the family.
Author:
Sorensen, Elaine Shaw.
General Notes:
Includes bibliographical references (p. 138-164) and index.
In spite of the increase in stress-coping research, little is known about how stress is actually perceived by children in the family setting. This is due in part to the real difficulties involved in collecting data on children's subjective experiences. In addition, what we currently know about children's stress and coping has traditionally derived from adult reporters, rather than from the children themselves. Filling a gap in the literature, this volume explores theoretical and methodological issues related to the study of children and families in general, and to stress-coping phenomena from the child's perspective in particular. The book challenges traditional deference to adult assessment by drawing data from both parents and children, revealing significant contrasts between the two. Through open-ended, qualitative measures of children's diaries and drawings, the book offers a glimpse into the inner world of the child and gives scholarly expression to the fact that children can, and readily will, articulate needs and perceptions if given an appropriate vehicle. The book's well-documented chapters discuss traditional approaches to stress and coping, implications for current child and family study, specific needs related to the study of children within the family, and implications for theory and methods. Taxonomies of children's stressors, coping responses, and coping resources are drawn from the data and examined in detail. The book concludes with suggestions for future research and clinical practice. Providing fascinating insight into children's actual experience of stress and coping, this volume lays the groundwork for ongoing research, scholarship, and therapeutic practice. Academicians, practitioners, and graduate students in family studies, child development, psychology and nursing will find this book invaluable in shedding light on the often overlooked culture of children.

This book presents a comprehensive overview of findings from the Children’s Worlds project – the most extensive and diverse study to have been conducted globally on children’s own views of their lives. It provides a unique comparative insight into the similarities and differences in children’s lives and well-being around the world, including findings that challenge prevailing assumptions of where, and in what contexts, children might experience a ‘good childhood’. The book draws out the key messages and implications from the study and identifies directions for future work on child well-being. It will be of interest to researchers and students in the field of childhood studies, as well as a wide range of professionals and organisations concerned with improving children’s quality of life.

Childhood is the most important stage of human development, a fact that makes children the central target group for social work intervention. In turn, most schools of human development and social work around the world have an elective course on children, with some offering a concentration in this area. Yet while there are plenty of textbooks on intervention with children that contain useful theories and skills, many focus on remedial rather than preventative strategies, and do not adopt a child rights perspective. In turn, books on child rights fail to link the latter either with theoretical background or the preventative approach. This book, aimed at faculty members and students in social work and related programs, breaks new ground by being the first to apply the child rights perspective and the preventative approach to intervention for children's psychosocial well-being. It covers crucial ground in child psychology, even providing an ecological perspective to potential developmental problems. Relevant to situations across the world, and integrating theory, practice and teaching, its three sections introduce the rights-based perspective to preventative intervention, then move on to examine primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for children’s psychosocial well-being.

Today, the challenge for Research on Children is the issue of the "good life". Discourses and the production of knowledge on the "good life" require a theoretical frame. This frame can be provided by various perspectives: the feminist ethic of care, the Human and Children's Rights Convention, the idea of welfare, or the Capability Approach. The aim of this book is to answer the question of how we can define and measure a "good life" for children growing up in the modern world. The book discusses the cogency of universalistic theories and explores the potential contribution of research on children and the possible integration of children into the research process and debates on the "good life".

The articles collected in this book reflect the state of the art in research and discussions on this topic.
